Ecommerce Store In Minutes Using Oscommerce And Oscommerce Templates

    2010 - 04.25

Shopping is an activity that we all have experienced. By either going to the grocery store to pick up eggs or to the mall to buy clothes. Today, with the development of the computers and of the Internet, some brilliant minds thought that it would be even better if people who do not have enough time to spend in shops, could buy stuff over the Internet. Revenues from ecommerce stores have increased consistently over the past few years. Logically, online shopping is strictly connected to the use of websites, because through the sites, people can view products and place orders.

First, whenever you plan to launch an ecommerce site, one of the most important things that you should plan is the layout. Why? Simple, image and first impression. When someone visits your online store, you want them to feel as if you’re a professional, not somebody who does not care about the appearance of their business. If the site is not professional, would you want to give these people your credit card information? If you went to buy a new car and the car you were interested in had “wash me” scribed into the dirt covered hood, would you buy it? Also, the layout should be clear and easy for your customers to navigate. Now, the next question is, how can someone have an ecommerce store like this when their knowledge about html is little or the budget is not very big? This question has two answers.

Ecommerce shopping cart and an template for the shopping cart. First I’ll explain the shopping cart. Shopping cart software is used to perform the duties of an online store. Duties such as maintaining inventory of products with photos and descriptions, processing orders and payments, etc. This software is open-source and available for free. Some of these are free, some require monthly fees, and some require a one time fee. Most ecommerce stores come with lots of options and can be most customized.

One of the free options is oscommerce. For many beginners or advanced users, oscommerce is the perfect option becasue it the software is free and is widely used. This brings me to oscommerce templates. They are already made so you can, in a way, preview the look of your site. Also they can be modified and updated, and moreover, they have no errors, so there won’t be any worries concerning a line or a box not being where it should.

These templates are made by web designers and developers and come in several themes and colors. There are many such templates that can be found on the Internet. For the most part you must pay for them. Some may be free, but you usually get what you pay for. Keep in mind that the price you will pay for a template is going to be much less than what you would pay a web designer to create a personalized ecommerce site for you. Sometimes thousands less.

If you decided not to use a template, it would also take much longer to develop your ecommerce site from scratch. On the other hand, using a template gives you the template at the time of purchase. Also, the template provider may provide configuration services for the template. This would allow you to do everything with one company at the same time.

Finally, I want to say that it is not a strike against you to use a template instead of hiring a web designer. This is often what designers and webmasters will tell you when you decide to use a template. These templates are made for you to use. Most templates and are actually created and used by web designers all the time.

Before starting your own ecommerce website you should think what you really want to do, how your site should look, and then choose from the large number of templates. Good luck.
This solution is ideal for the beginners who want to start their own online shopping site or web designers who want to save time.

Installing Joomla Templates – It’s Really Quite Easy

    2010 - 04.22

You have just downloaded a few beautiful Joomla templates and realized that you have no idea how to go about installing these templates. The website you downloaded them from isn’t clear on this; it seems to assume that you already know how to install them. It is really not difficult at all. There are two ways to install a Joomla template, and we shall start with the easier method.

The first method requires you to log on to the Joomla administrative interface. This method assumes that you are using Joomla 1.5 and that your template comes in a zipped file, which is the standard. There is no need to unzip the template file. After logging in to the administrative interface, bring your mouse over to the main menu and hover over the word “Extensions”. A menu will display and you should then click on “Install/Uninstall”.

You will then be shown the Extension Manager page. Click on the button called “Choose File” and browse to the location where the template zipped file is. Then click on “Upload File & Install”. You will then see “Install Template Success”, and you can then proceed to the Template Manager to select and use your new template.

The second method requires that you use an FTP program, and that the template is unzipped beforehand. After you unzip the template file, you will notice that a folder containing the files used by your template has been created. Run your FTP program and connect to your Joomla site. Navigate to the “templates” folder on the site and upload the folder that was created when you unzipped the template file. This may take a while, and after it has completed, proceed to Template Manager to select this new template.

It’s really very easy to change how your entire web site looks under Joomla. With just a click in Template Manager, you will be able to change the entire look and feel of your site.

Learn How to Add Google Gadgets to a Joomla Website

    2010 - 04.21

Google offers a tremendous amount of “gadgets” that can be embedded in to your site. These gadgets can be many things including movie show times, currency converters and weather data. If you find one of these that you like, or if you have a client that would like to add one of them to their website, you will need to understand how to include them in to a Joomla website.

The most important part of adding Google Gadgets to a Joomla site is finding where and how to put the code so that it will appear only in the locations you or your client specify. This is relatively easy, and I will explain it step by step next.

The first thing to do is to find out where to find all of Google’s Gadgets. Go to google.com/ig/directory. Next, choose a Gadget you would like to have on your site and click on “Add to your webpage”. Then click on “Get the Code” underneath the gadget and copy the code and paste it in to a text document and save it someplace on your hard drive.

Next, login to the administrator area of your site. Go to Extensions > “Module Manager” and click on “New”. When you are prompted to make a choice, choose “Custom HTML” and click “Next”. Give the module a title and decide if you want the title to show up in the browser for all of your visitors to see.

You will have to decide which module position and which pages the Gadget will appear on next. Hopefully you will have thought this out ahead of time and then can add the pages under the “Menu Assignment” pane and choose the module position from the pop-up menu. You can always change both of these anytime you want if you don’t like how the gadget appears on certain pages.

Finally, in “Custom Output” click on HTML in the bottom of the pane if you are using an html editor, then paste the code obtained from Google that you had saved in to a text document earlier. If you are not using an HTML editor, just paste the code right in to the Custom Output pane. Now, click “Save” and your Gadget will be in the module position on the pages you had specified.

Blogging Quick and Easy – Book Review

    2010 - 04.16

I just finished reading “Blogging Quick and Easy; A Planned Approach to Blogging Success” by Tom Masters. I just started blogging full time and as part of my daily routine I try and read as many books about blogging as I can. This book is one of the better ones in this category.

As the title suggests, this book is all about blogging and how to create a successful blog. The author does a great job of explaining the basics. What I really liked is how he simplified everything and broke it all down into simple steps. Many people who want to start a blog are not technical and Mr. Masters understands this and has written this for a non technical audience. He provides some outstanding tips about how to expand your readership and how to make your blog more visually appealing to attract more readers.

I really like the use of the visuals and screenshots as I think it made the information much easier to understand. It was also very helpful that a resource guide was provided so you can go to places online to further read about some of these topics. The best suggestion and the one that I will implement is about planning and having goals set for each day and breaking them down into simple actions. To me this was extremely helpful because I can easily overwhelm myself.

In closing, I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is thinking about starting a blog as well as new and established bloggers. Everyone can learn something from this guide.

Go Kart Engine – Should I Buy This Engine Or Not? – It is Seized Up!

    2010 - 04.14

I tell my readers that engines need not cost $300 or even $400 but $20. So the search is constantly on for a cheap engine.

I received this email the other day which basically sums up a typical engine problem. You go out see an engine and wonder if buying it was such a good idea.

“I just purchased a 20 dollar fairly new 5hp lawnmower engine. I’ve got it home, and I can’t seem to start it. There is a lot of tension, and I can’t seem to pull the string all the way. Am I doing something wrong?”

Obviously, engines are supposed to spin, but you get these once in awhile situations where an engine does not spin. First of all it is important to understand why an engine spins, and then secondly, what would cause it not to spin.

9 times out of 10 and engine will not spin because something external is wrong with the engine. The other 1 out of 10 problems are internal. And to put it into perspective most engines can be fixed so that they will spin again, using little or no money.

So to start it is important to understand the externals of and the internals of an engine…

The outside of the engine is really a shell with a shaft sticking out one side, and a flywheel on the other side. Then attached to this box is a fuel system (carberator) and an exhaust pipe. As you have learned in other articles, the magneto is attached to the flywheel side of the engine, and grabs magnetic pulses from the flywheel to make sparks for the spark plug.

To cool the engine down, there is a glorified fan on the engine and it is incorporated into the flywheel. The fan is covered with a shroud that routes the air around the engine blows the heat off the engine.

To cap it all off, typically on the flywheel shroud housing is a starter pulley system.

The internals of the engine to the casual observer looks like spinning gears, and oscillating parts. But you and I know that the main parts are the crank shaft, the cam shaft, the valve tappets and valves, the connecting rod, and the piston.

(I am assuming an understanding of the Otto Cycle or the Two Cycle engines, if not please read articles on these topics)

The main thing to understand about the engine internals is:

    - the crankshaft must spin freely
    - the piston must slide up and down freely
    - the connecting rod should articulate around the crank journal freely
    - the valves must move up and down without and resistance.

To keep an engine from spinning, something has to interfere. Interfere means, block, or get in the way.

For example a rusted bearing does not spin because the balls are now not spherical but bumpy with rust. A bumpy bearing will get jammed on the bumps and come and we say “ginding to a halt.”

Rust also has a nasty habit of actually filling in gaps and making things solid. A shaft in a bushing for example will expand with rust and become jammed in the bushing.

So the question for an engine is: “What are the most likely spots that will cause the engine to not turn over?”

Next time we will discuss rent a wheel

    Optimizing Dynamic Websites

    2010 - 04.09

With technological advancement, web 2.0 web applications are being developed every day and static websites are no longer just simply static, they are either migrated to dynamic websites using PHP, ASP, JSP and other programming languages to provide customized contents to users and also rich interaction or static websites are made more interactive by adding elements like flash banners to impart very interactive look to your website. These dynamic websites have provided user interaction by providing interface for users, eBay online auction store, Amazon book store; Yahoo stores are live examples which let users do real time shopping by creating accounts online, place orders, check their account status and swipe cards for payment – everything is secure online. Ecommerce storefront development, portal development, b2b osCommerce development have mobilized are life and making everything possible over internet.

Now coming to these dynamic websites visibility, these web sites should be search engine friendly but it is really difficult to make these dynamic websites search engine friendly.

What led to need of creating dynamic websites??
With growing need to sell products and services online for global reach and visibility in very short span of time websites are developed and internet proved the best tool for promotion of your business. Selling services through static websites is not a hard nut to crack but coming to selling thousands of products online developers started finding difficulty. Dynamic websites are web sites whose web pages are generated on fly and provide interactive experience to users. Web pages have interactive navigation and generated on demand in comparison to static websites where web pages navigation are just hyperlink based. Static websites are easily indexable by major search engines but dynamic websites are not easily indexed by search engines. With the point to sell products online, ecommerce storefront are developed providing user interactive interface, this virtual online store provides real time shopping interface to its customers. It is not easy to develop a static website to promote thousands of products and manage those pages, as this requires creating unique pages for every product.

These dynamic websites to create interactivity use either server side scripting or client side scripting languages. Dynamic web pages are created on fly, many web pages really do not exist on the server, on demand they are created when a user generates a query and if the site is database driven, query string is manipulated and then this string pulls the web page from the database and they do not physically exist and thus are not indexed by search engine. It is not really easy to index these websites, but there are few important ways to optimize these websites for search engines.

URL Rewriting: Dynamic web pages URLs are query strings with delimiters like question mark; also these URLs are very long and have encoded variables generated by scripting languages. These links are generated and modified by scripting language by adding a session id to the generated URLs to keep away users from blocking the cookies, these session ids are unique for every visit of Google. Still many search engines do not index these dynamic web pages, the search engine spider get lost in loops. You need to manually rewrite these URLs by removing special characters, symbols and variables like – ?!= these. Some open source content management systems have modules for URL rewriting. Example: Joomla generates search engine friendly URLs and provides page caching mechanism. CGI/Perl script is another way for getting your site indexed by search engines. Query part of dynamically generated URLs is assigned variable that returns a search engine friendly URLs that are easily indexed by search engine crawlers.

Creating a static site map for your dynamic website: Make sure that your websites’ dynamically generated all web pages are linked to the static sitemap page and submit this static web page to search engines and directories.

Other is URL re-write module will help your dynamic website to be indexed by search engines but again it depends on the server your website is hosted. For Apache server mod-rewrite scripting module helps to modify your URL in search engine friendly format. For IIS windows based server ISAP rewrite program is used.

Turning off link appendage, PHP.ini file, will instruct server to turn off user session id and only switch on cookies session id (session.use_trans_sid and turn on session.use_only_cookies). This can also be achieved by writing .HTACCESS file and adding “php_flag session.use_trans_sid Off” and php_flag session.use_only_cookies On.

Most important what I want to discuss with you about ecommerce websites are server authentication. .htpasswd and .htaccess are two files that will let you password protect your web pages on server and keep your information safe and secure.

.htpasswd file should be placed anywhere other that directory of the website and its path is defined as /etc/apache2/.htpasswd as it is used to keep user login and password of website’s users.

.htaccess file contains access information of the website users and their rights and are placed in the root of website directory.

Now let me come to some of the most important issues – the speed of loading and low overhead for a dynamic web page. Load balancing, bandwidth management, security, encryption are some of the other important issues which we need to consider before creating a dynamic website.

On demand constructed web pages take more response time and also server has to take extra at the time of on-demand page generation. Performance and scalability are most important issues that have risen with these dynamic websites. It is also calculated that server-side latency accounts for 40 percent of the total page delivery time experienced by end users.

To speed up dynamic web pages construction at server side we need to consider dynamic page pre-generation, fragment caching and code caching.

Blogging Software – 7 Top Reasons to Choose Word Press

    2010 - 04.07

If you are eager to create a blog there are many kinds of
blogging software to get you going easily and quickly. One
of most popular is Blogger.com. However if you are serious
about growing a professional business, I’d suggest getting
a real domain name and hosting account. This could be
compared to the days when many companies offered free
hosting so you could set up your own web site. After a few
years these companies went belly up and so did your site.
It therefore makes better sense to start correctly
otherwise you will only regret it later.

Here’s some of the major benefits of using Word Press
    Blogging Software:

    1. Easy to install and set up. If you have a hosting
account which uses Linux servers they will probably have
Fantastico. This is a tool which allows you to install Word
Press within a few minutes from the cpanel that comes with
your hosting account. Just make sure you have the latest
version otherwise update your Word Press installation
    before you start customizing it.

If you are strapped for money and can’t afford a domain
name or a hosting account, you can also create a free
    account with Word Press.

    2. Hundreds of templates to choose from. You don’t have to
be a programmer or even know html to start a blog with Word
Press. You can select from the three templates they provide
at installation and you can easily switch between them. If
you are not happy with them there are other sites which
display Word Press themes and allow you to download them ie

    of-615-free-wordpress-15-and-20-themes-templates-available-for-
    download-266.htm

    3. Customization. The basic themes that come with the Word
Press installation can easily be customized to suit your
    needs. There are 100s of plug-ins (http://wp-plugins.net/)
which will allow you to alter the color, design, images,
add contact forms, photo albums etc.

    4. Great documentation and support forums. The
documentation that comes with Word Press, covers almost
every aspect of your Word Press Blog. If you get stuck the
support forums are always quick to respond to your questions.

    RSS or ‘really simple
syndication’, is automatically integrated into Word Press so
every time you create a post or make a comment it creates a
feed for it. This allows those with RSS Feeders to read the
    post at their own leisure.

    6. Easy organization. Most Word Press templates include
pages, categories, links, and feeds. These are usually
located in the sidebar but can be easily customized to go
elsewhere. You can also add other features should you need
    them for your blog.

    7. Monetization. You can easily add AdSense ads to your
blog with a plug-in. By placing ads in strategic locations
on your blog it will allow you to make money. You can also
make money by including links to affiliate programs related
to the topic of your blog.

Conclusion: If you want to save time looking for blogging
software that is extremely flexible because of it’s
hundreds of template options and add-ons, then go for Word
    Press…you won’t regret it.

From Web Hosting to Your First Website – Installing Joomla CMS

    2010 - 04.04

Joomla is a great content management system. It is used by many people worldwide for personal websites, blogs, online shops, or for some other type of website. Joomla is also used by some companies for their homepage. Because Joomla is universal and has a lot of extensions you can use it for almost anything.

Installing Joomla is a very simple process. You need some web hosting account. With it you get disk space where you will upload your files, FTP account for transferring files and MySQL database which Joomla needs. Before you start with installation make sure that you domain is pointing to your hosting and the FTP account works and you can transfer files. The next step is to create a MySQL database. Simply log in to your hosting control panel and go to the database management. You can also use phpMyAdmin utility to do the same. Create one databases and one user which should have complete access to this database. For Joomla installation you will need database name, user name and password.

Now you should go to the official Joomla website and download the latest version. You will get a compressed archive file. You can either upload this file to the web server and unpack it there if you control panel has some file manager or you can unpack it on your local disk and then upload individual files to the web server. Once you have all the files on you web server at your hosting company you can start the installation process.

Simply go to your domain and you should get Joomla installation page asking for language selection. If you get some error then check if the domain is working, you have uploaded Joomla files to the correct (public) folder and the hosting account is working. If everything works as expected then simply follow instructions. Joomla installer will check your configuration and warn you if something is missing or there is some setting that may cause you trouble. When asked for database data enter database name, user name and password of the database you have created earlier. You will also be asked whether you would like to install sample data. Unless you are an experienced Joomla user you should do this so you will have some sample articles and news to start with

You will be also asked for FTP account. This is a good workaround to allow Joomla to access your files with Read/Write permissions without having direct access to the files. The last step after the installation process is finished is to remove the “installation” folder. Now your Joomla website is up and running. Go to your domain and you should see default Joomla website. Log in to the Joomla administrator and start creating your pages.
