    Using a Content Management System

    2012 - 01.02

A Content Management System is a type of website design. It is a website that allows you to take control of your own site. It is the name given to a computer software that is used to create, edit and manage as well as publish content in an organised fashion.

This system means that you don’t have the added expense of dealing with web site designers as you are able to edit it yourself. Many of you may be left thinking how can I edit a website without technical knowledge? The answer is easily with a Content Management System. You don’t need to have technical knowledge to figure out how to change aspects of your website via this System you just merely have to have a go at doing it. The idea of editing it yourself allows you as the end user to update content, which is highly important as websites have to be kept up-to-date to be effective.

There is a frequent use of content management systems for storing, controlling, versioning and publishing industry-specific documentation such as news articles, operators, manuals, technical manuals, sales guides and marketing brochures. Some of the content that you may be editing and looking after as part of a content management system includes computer files, media such as images, audio files and electronic documents as well as other web related content.

It means that you have to log into an administration area on your site, which gives you a varying degree of control over aspects such as the ones named above. Also some of the tasks that you may have to undertake within it includes adding new pages, administering site members, sending e-mail newsletters and changing web site colours.

So what exactly is this content that you will be administering? It is basically any type or piece of digital information. This could be an image or a piece of text, a graphic or a video. What the digital information is depends on what your site is about and what type of information you need on there in order to promote it correctly. The content on your website is anything that is likely to be managed in electronic format.

Ok so we have covered what content is so what exactly is a content management system? It is effectively the management of your content, which is described above. By combining rules, process and/or workflows in such a way that its electronic storage is deemed to be ‘managed’ rather than ‘un-managed’. The system itself can be defined as a tool or a combination of tools that ensure you get efficient and effective production of the desired output of the content that you are using.

If you would like to know more about what it can do for your website or if you would like to have one placed on your website then get in touch with a web design company today and find out what web design is best for you.

How to Set Up an e-Commerce Site

    2012 - 01.02

Want to know what is involved in selling your products online? This article will explain the basic elements that go into making an ecommerce site work.

E-Commerce opportunities on the internet are mind-boggling. Ecommerce transactions in the U.S. are projected to hit $198 billion in 2006 according to shop.org. According to eMarketer, Canadian consumers spent $3.8 billion online in 2004 and that number is expected to rise to $5.7 billion in 2006.

There are four main costs to setting up an e-commerce store:

Hosting costs/shopping cart software Hosting costs for an ecommerce shopping cart solution range from free to $79.95 per month or more. Before you purchase a shopping cart system, there are many things to consider. When choosing shopping cart software, you need to consider the number of credit card processors and shipping services it supports. Credit card processors and shipping services can change, so the software will need to be easy to update and be well supported to keep up with the changes in the market. You will also need to consider how easy it is to set up and add products and how easy it is for the customer to use. Shop in some the shopping cart’s sample stores before you make your decision. It is also important to determine if it can handle the tax system where you are selling and if it supports your chosen method of shipping, whether it is by weight, fixed amount, or both. You also have to consider the company who will be hosting your site and/or shopping cart. If your shopping cart is going to be hosted by the same company that hosts your site, you need to ensure that it will be fully supported. You will also need to ensure that your order forms and shopping cart will be secure. Ask your web hosting provider if your hosting package includes the use of their secure server (SSL) or if it will cost extra. Most commercial shopping carts are hosted separately from your site, and the SSL is included in the montly fees you will pay for the software. Some popular shopping carts are: o X-Cart.com – A popular commercial shopping cart. o Oscommerce.org – This is an open source based online shop, (so it’s free!) but it is not easy to set up for a ‘newbie’. You will also need to find a host that supports it. o Zencart.com- Another free open source program that is maintained by volunteer efforts. It is based on oscommerce, and a little easier to set up. Like any open source program, however, it does not have support staff to help you if you are stuck. To solve any problems, you have to rely on forums and other users to help you. o Cartville.com o Paypal.com – Paypal offers a free shopping cart, but it does not work with many tax systems, like the one in Canada. Development Costs Whether you hire someone to develop and customize your store or you do it yourself, there are costs involved. You will need to customize the color, logo, shipping, tax and addresses, just to name a few. You will also have to set up your products and product options. Cost of a merchant account The next cost involves setting up a method of receiving credit card payments on-line. Setting up a Paypal account is the least expensive option (2.9% + $0.30 USD per transaction at the time of writing). Costs for your own merchant account are higher – there are usually set up fees ($500+), transaction fees (up to 3% per transaction) and a monthly flat fee as well. If you already have a merchant account set up off-line, an e-commerce account will be significantly cheaper. Promotional Costs You should also budget for advertising and search engine marketing to drive consumers to your site. After all, what good is having a store if no one comes to shop? This article is by no means all encompassing, but it does cover the basics of selling online. An ecommerce site is an affordable way to sell your products to your customers. Compare the costs with setting up a physical store front – the cost of selling on-line is truly cost-efficient. But Beware! Even though opportunities abound in today’s market, if you try to run an ecommerce website on the cheap you will ultimately limit its potential. Good luck with your store!

Mobike Motor – A Brief Look

    2012 - 01.01

A motorcycle is a two wheeled machine which is propelled forward by a motor. This motor is generally an internal combustion engine which imparts the forward momentum to the machine. The principle of gyro motion dictates the essence of motorcycle movement forward where the Centripetal and centrifugal forces balance each other while the bike is in motion. Both these forces complement each other and give stability to the bike in motion. A forward momentum (Mass x Velocity) is an essential component for stability of the motorcycle when in motion. This forward motion balances the centripetal and centrifugal forces. This forward movement is achieved through the power supplied by the internal combustion motor or engine. The motorcycle engine may run on gasoline or diesel. But now electric power for traction is another option that is available.

In almost all motorcycles the engine is located just below the petrol tank. This position has the effect of lowering the center of gravity of the bike and gives the machine greater stability. The motorcycle is propelled forward by the engine which supplies its traction power through a steel chain that is connected to the rear wheel. All motorcycles are rear wheel driven. Power is transmitted from the rear wheel by means of this metal chain.

The motorcycle motor’s construction is quite simple. It consists of a single or set of pistons that move in a chamber or a sleeve .The motion is generated by an electric spark. The electric spark ignites a gas and air mixture that releases gases that move the pistons up and down in a cycle. The pistons when they move generate power to a mechanism that moves a connecting chain to the rear wheel. All motorcycles are rear driven.

The power that is generated by the motorcycle engine is through the movement of the piston. When the pistons move they impart the power to the crank which in this case is the chain. The cycle of motion of the piston in the cylinder may follow a two stroke or four strokes. Two stroke engines have a simpler construction and thus are easier to maintain. They also generate more operating power vis a vis four stroke engines. But four stroke engines are more eco-friendly and give a smoother ride on the road. Another advantage of 4 stroke engines is that they can have multiple cylinders. This in turn translates to greater operating power. In two stroke engines very second stroke is the power stroke while in the 4 stroke engines the power stroke is the 4th stroke. A stroke refers to a single movement of the piston.

All motorcycle motors have a rated capacity. This capacity is related to the volume of the chamber in which the piston operates. The capacity of these motors may vary from 25 cc to 1500 cc. The capacity of the pistons and chamber is directly proportional to the output of power. This is also referred to as Brake horse power.

The bike motor is started by means of an electric spark. This in turn ignites the gas air mixture in the chamber and sets the pistons into motion. This spark is generated by a dynamo. Earlier bikes were all kick start. The bike was started by pumping a lever down wards with the leg. But latest motorcycles have incorporated the self start option. In such bikes the pistons are fired by a starter motor.

The older motorcycles had their current supplied by a magneto. Now however the latest bikes are replaced by Capacitor Discharge Ignition. CDI systems provide higher ignition current for starting making the bike easier to start. Kawasaki was the first to adapt this for motorcycles.

Another variant of the bike motor is the diesel engine. Unlike in cars the diesel engine is not adapted for large scale motorcycle use. This is because the diesel engine has a lower efficiency and is also heavier than a corresponding petrol engine. Diesel engines are prone to greater vibration and are generally unsuitable for two wheelers. However a limited variety of diesel powered bikes are in the market.

Bikes with large displacement usually have multi-cylinders. Such motorcycles may have 2, 4 or even 6 cylinders. There are many types of multi-cylinder options available in the market. Cylinders of the bike motors may be positioned in vertical or twin cylinder configuration. They may also be positioned in line. Another development is the Wankel engine made by Felix Wankel (1902 – 1988). Wankel engines generate greater power for the motorcycle. Bike motors can go up to six cylinders. Six cylinders are fitted on the heaviest bikes and include bikes like the Honda CBX and the Kawasaki KZ1300.

Liquid-cooled motorcycles engines are a further development. Such motorcycles engines have a radiator like in a car. The radiator follows the principle of heat dissipation and keeps the engine cool by circulating water or a liquid coolant. Liquid cooled engines can however be fitted only on the larger bikes and are unsuitable for lower displacement bikes. Liquid cooled bikes for a specific displacement generate greater power than air cooled bike engines. They also last longer than an air cooled engine. Air-cooled bikes are however much cheaper to buy and maintain with simpler construction.

However, 4 stroke engines have captured the commercial market. Four stroke engine bikes give a smoother ride on the road and also generate greater power over broader spectrum of speed. But despite this two stroke engines are in great demand in the developing countries, as cost is a big factor there. In the United States and Western Europe the two stroke bike is now an oddity and motorcycle manufacturers mostly market four stroke bike variants.

Another variant of the motorcycle engine is the electric engine. These engines are still in the development stage and are presently only used to power small scooters and mopeds. These electric motors mostly operate on lead acid batteries. However a negative point against these batteries is that they take more than 4 hours to recharge. They also have limitations of speed and performance and unsuitable for heavier bikes. However some concept bikes using a lithium battery have been tested but they are far from commercial production stage due to the prohibitive cost involved.

Building Static WordPress Websites Fast and Easy

    2012 - 01.01

First you need to find a nice template that you like. There are many free WordPress template sites. It is very easy to find Go to Google or any favorite search engine and do a search for” Free WordPress Templates” or “Free WordPress Themes”.

Static WordPress site rarely need the the blog items like calendars or archives etc. A simple solution is to navigate in your WordPress administration panel to design>widgets. You can then add or subtract the widgets you want and you can make the sidebar look exactly as you like. This way you don’t have to touch any code.

Now for the plugins. I recommend these basic plugins.:

Add the all in one seo plugin.

Add the privacy policy plugin. Optional, but I always have a privacy policy on my sites.

Add a sitemap plugin if you want. This is very good for search engines to find all your content.

Add a Google Sitemap and register it at Google. This is very important and will help you do well in Google.

If you want AdSense or affiliate banners add the ads manager plugin or any of the other WordPress plugins available. I like and use ads manager. It is very versatile and it can also can be used to easily add other types of banners to a page and control it by the Admin panel. With ad manager you also need the exec php plugin. This is really important this if you are going to hard code includes into the template. I use it to add banners to the sidebar via widgets and the text widget. If you don’t know what this means then you can forget it.

Find the plugins at WordPress.org or do a Google search for each of the above plugins. If I am looking for some type of plugin I usually do a Google search by “keyword” and then “WordPress plugin.” I always navigate to the authors site for the latest plugin and instructions on how to use the plugin.

Activate the plugins in your WordPress admin panel. They are located in the plugins link to the right if you are using WordPress 2.5. Again, I recommend that you read the instructions that are on the individual author plugin sites as to how to use each WordPress plugin.

Create a page. Label it whatever you like. Scroll down the page writing panel to the “all in one seo” area and add keywords and description to your page. This is the same as adding the keywords and descriptions to the meta content in the head portion of your template.

Scroll down some more to comments and pings and turn off “Allow Comments” so you won’t see a user comment box. I want my site to look like a static site so I don’t need commenting. If you want also un-check Allow Pings. It is up to you. I always un-check both.

At the bottom of the page you will see a “page order” area. If you want to have a certain order to your pages in your category menu then name the page you want on top of the menu 1 then the next page you create 2 etc. You can later change the order of your pages by using this feature. This is good so that maybe a sales page will be on top.

I also tend to use the subcategories Parent – child a lot. As an example, I will make a page called “articles” and then add different article pages as a subcategory to articles. I then add some form of introduction to the main article page and have the other articles easily accessible off the main article page. A nice touch for me is that I like to find a template that has a horizontal menu bar with drop down lists. I think it looks very classy. For me everything is then neat and orderly. But this technique is up to you.

In the WordPress admin panel go to settings>reading. On top you will see reading settings. Then “front page displays”. In the front page displays check the radio button “A static page (select below)” and then from the front page drop down menu click the page you want to use for your front page. That page I usually title Welcome or I will add a keyword rich title. If you don’t want any title leave blank.

With just these little changes you have the start of a static website with WordPress. The key is to use pages instead of posts, add keywords and descriptions via the “all in one seo” and your site is a really nice static website. Remember you can control the way the sidebar looks with widgets.

Do not choose templates that make use of the WordPress tagging feature initially. Some of these templates are called newspaper themes. They are a little harder to do and take a little more to understand. Once you master the basic look then you can branch out and try the tagging features of WordPress.

You can add to this basic formula to make your site even more user-friendly. Again, the above tips will give you a basic static and great looking website.
