"The Google Story" by David A Vise and Mark Malseed – Book Review

    2011 - 05.29

    About the book

The Google story describes, as expected the Googles 10 year history. How did Google become a verb? How did Google become the most important and influential company on the Internet? How did two Stanford students create one of the world’s most recognizable brands in just a few short years?

This book profiles both the company and its founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin The book is filled with inside glimpses into the history of Google and the challenges is faced on its way to success, It gives an insight to its unique corporate atmosphere and vision. It is a great book for anyone who wants to understand just how this unconventional company has become so successful in such a short time.

    About the authors

David A. Vise is a senior advisor to New Mountain Capital, a leading New York-based private equity firm, and to New Mountain Vantage, the firm’s public equity fund..

Mark Malseed is an investigative journalist and information industry consultant. Following the release of The Google Story, his first book he shares his investigative insights with businesses, organizations and schools in “Google Sleuthing” seminars.

What to learn from this book?

If you are interested in the history of the Internet the story of Google is a must read.

It is fun to read. One of the things I learned from reading this book is that Pagerank is not just about the ranking of your webpage but the algorithm that is given the name by its developer Larry Page. It learns you about the companies mantra: “Don’t be evil”.

The book can also be used as an inspiration if you are setting up your own business and how you can become successful too.

    Clear Blogging – Book Review

    2011 - 05.06

I just finished reading “Clear Blogging: How people blogging are changing the world and how you can join them” by Bob Walsh. As an owner of several highly successful blogs, I always like to read what other are saying about blogging and the future. After reading this book, I must say that I was a bit disappointed. The book has some bright spots, but overall it is average in a very crowded space.

The book covers all the basic of blogging, from getting started, hot to become successful and then he dives into the future of blogging. A couple of things that I did enjoy about the book were that is well written and fun to read. The author has a great conversational writing style that flows very nicely. My problem is that the content could have been stronger. My favorite part of the book was the Interview portion where he has a question and answer session with some of the biggest names in the blogging arena. I am surprised that I wasn’t asked to participate. I also enjoyed the author’s commentary, although at times I disagreed with some of it.

My major criticism of the book was that it was way too long and could have been cut in half. There is a lot of filler and too many screen shots that do not add much to the book.

In closing, I am neutral on this book. It was well written and there is some good information but in my opinion there are better books to purchase on this topic.

Number One Online Search Engine Has Changed American Society Forever – Book Review

    2011 - 03.27

    As we look at companies like Google, we are reminded by the incredible power of the Internet. Still, what do we learn from this to help our own individual companies grow? Why is it that Google does so well, and how can we use this information to increase our profits? If you’ve ever had that question, I have an incredible book that I believe you should read. The name of the book is;

“What Would Google Do?” By Jeff Jaruis, Collins press publishing, a division of Harper Press Inc., New York, New York, 2009, ISBN: 978-0-06-170971-5.

Wow, this book has an incredible amount of Google history, and if you were ever wondering how Google came from out of the blue, and passed all the other search engines such a Yahoo, this will explain it all. After you read this you will realize that they didn’t come out of the blue it all and they were able to earn the Internet surfers respect by keeping it simple and giving them exactly what they wanted.

You will learn about their rocket ship of success, and some of the mistakes they made along the way too. This is a good book which explains search engine philosophy, and it takes us behind the minds of the currently largest and most well-known search engine in the world. The author then uses the Google model as a guide to explain to other companies, and even small businesses how they can create a user centric future concept to better their companies, and continually innovate.

    There were many great quotes in the book, and they are also chapter titles, quotes that will make you think, and take a good hard look at your current company and business. For instance;

“The Worst Customer Is Your Best Friend”

In other words, customer complaints can help you better your service and products if you will listen.

“Do What You Do Best and Link to the Rest”

In other words, stick to your core business, and help other businesses get what they want, and watch both of you grow.

“If You Are Not Searchable, You Will Not Be Found”

In other words, in the new paradigm of the information age, you must have a strong online presence, or you don’t exist in the minds of the consumers, customers, and clients. If they can’t find you online, you aren’t real. Indeed, I know many people who actually believe that and it is a common perception, and therefore, it is a reality in the marketplace. In any case this book was totally excellent, and I highly recommend it to.

Affiliate Rockstar Status Reveals Secrets of Affiliate Marketing

    2011 - 03.10

Every Affiliate Marketing e-book boasts itself as a Million Dollar Blueprint. In that case, every affiliate marketer will be rubbing off shoulders with Bill Gates. But it does not happen in real life. Chances are there that a much hyped e-book may project some unknown techniques. Those techniques work for some and for others it may not. All the fingers of a single hand may not look alike, so does one technique suits well to a particular affiliate marketer but it may not be worth to others.

A real Affiliate Marketing e-Book has to satisfy all the internet marketers irrespective of their area of operation. Last week, when I was searching for new products in ClickBank marketplace, I was thunderstruck. My attention has gone to an affiliate marketing e-Book by name Affiliate Rockstar Status. It was first seen on August 18, 2007 and got an immediate gravity of 380+. Really Amazing sales!

Being an internet marketer, I should be aware of the present scenario in the market. So I’ve immediately placed an order for the copy of Affiliate Rockstar Status which was priced at $77. It was a moderately (sized 80+ pages) with an absolute information. I’ve to change to my words here. It is not a simple affiliate marketing e-Book that is intended for the beginners. Moreover the sales page and even the title of the e-Book say that it is a million dollar blueprint that helps to make YOU a Rock Star. May be the author wants to convey the meaning that you will lead the life of rockstar with this ebook. I don’t agree with that. But I would clearly say that it had a solid content meant exclusively for those who are prepared for PPC.

PPC is a different segment of internet marketing where everybody cannot excel. Those who have enough guts to enter into Google AdWords campaign should really take it. Affiliate RockStar Status is an amazing e-book that is meant to master Google AdWords. The authors Chris and Eric are very famous for their earlier works like Affiliate Project X and DJK which broke the records. This time they have come up with a powerful technique to get Google AdWords clicks costing you really nothing. You just can’t stop yourself from buying it.

Internet Book Review About Google & Human Knowledge

    2011 - 02.10

The Internet is perhaps the greatest communication device ever devised by mankind. The Internet is also a repository of all human knowledge. Of course, human knowledge would not be worth all that much with a modernized ‘Dewey Decimal System’ to help someone find exactly what they are looking for right? Thus, the Internet wouldn’t be of much value without search features or search engines.

Today, the number one search engine is Google, in the past it has been something else. There use to be lots of competition in the search space, but that has not been the case in the last 5-years, as Google has run away with the market. Over 70% of all searches on the Internet come from Google now, that is an incredible market share indeed.

Apparently, the human race has spoken and chosen voting with their clicks and minds for Google to bring back relevant data. This is a huge happening in the lifestyles of human beings, it really changes everything. Google is indexing the world, literally and making it all available in .02387603 seconds!

Of course, Google is not stopping here by any means, each month they come out with new initiatives and ideas, keeping pace, yes, at Internet speed with the evolution of the online virtual world. In fact, the story and history and the future history of Google is quite fascinating. I’d like to recommend a very good book to you on this subject.

    JQuery UI 1.6 Book Review

    2011 - 01.29

I just finished reading and going through some examples in jQuery UI 1.6 by Dan Wellman. Javascript is not really my cup of tea that’s why I use jQuery, a framework for easily interacting with Javascript. jQuery UI is a library built on top of jQuery which allows you to create interactions, full-featured widgets and animation effects. This book written by Dan Wellman, is a book that will give you a good foundation in learning this plugin.

The book takes you step by step into implementing jQuery user interface layouts. What I like most about the book is how the author explained a complex topic into a simple one. The book is complete and covers every aspect of user interface elements, from tabs, accordions, dialog boxes, slider, date picker, auto-complete, drag and drop, resizing, selections, sorting and other interface effects. I also like the part where the author would present a basic interface concept and discuss it and then have tutorials right after to help you fully understand the idea. I also found the use of screenshots very helpful.

The book has in-depth explanations on each component; building from its default basic state into a more advanced state. Additionally, the book also looks at how components can be used in real world scenarios. This book is aimed at user interface designers and developers who need to learn to implement user interfaces quickly.? I can understand and code PHP but it’s a real challenge for me whenever heavy Javascript scripting would be involved.

Overall this book is excellent for beginners and contains useful examples along with some good in-depth explanations. My only concern is I can see some of the content in this book being outdated fairly quickly. If you use jQuery and want to start implementing user interfaces quickly and efficiently, you should consider picking up this book for sure.

Review of "Magento – Beginner’s Guide" by William Rice

    2011 - 01.16

Being that Axsys Technology Group provides website design services and hosting for many online stores, and it’s one of the things that we specialize in, I was asked by Packt Publishing to review their recently released book, written by William Rice, on the subject of Magento.

    A Little History

Most e-commerce websites today aren’t (or shouldn’t be) written from scratch. Instead, they should be designed on top of an existing e-commerce engine in order to take advantage of all the hard work and testing that has already gone into the chosen engine.

One of the first engines that I (as well as my team) worked with, is osCommerce. This is perhaps one of the oldest e-commerce engines in existence today. As a result, it has gained from the community that has supported it for years. As security issues and other bugs are discovered, others from the community contribute patches and code to fix them. As a request for a new feature is desired, others provide the fulfillment for the need. This has resulted in a common thread that has spanned across the years, with a huge feature set, able to be fairly easily extended to support just about any needed or desired feature set. However, because of its age, osCommerce has also suffered most recently in terms of being difficult to include some of the newer web 2.0 and Ajax feature set that some of the more recently released engines provide.

Out With The Old, In With The New

Although some can easily turn their backs on older technologies such as osCommerce, we as a company have many years vested in its technology, and continue to update it to support newer features. However, that’s not too say that we haven’t looked at supporting other e-commerce engines, and in fact, we have been looking at Magento as a potential platform for supporting upcoming clients and websites on.

Thus, immediately after being selected to review the Packt book on Magento, I jumped at the opportunity to finally have an excuse to get comfy with Magento. From the onset, Magento was written to do two things, and do them really well. One: support existing e-commerce functionality and provide a full feature set; two: provide the ability of easily being “skinned”. Skinning is the term used to refer to ability of having a new look and feel (from the site visitor’s perspective), to differentiate the site from other e-commerce websites. Essentially, it allows you to have a unique look for your website. This means a custom colorset, fonts, images, layout, etc. The collection of these colors, fonts, images, and layout are collectively known as a “theme” in Magento speak.

However, Magento goes above and beyond this, to allow the customization of how products are treated, and the relationship between those products.

William’s book concentrates on the installation and configuration of a Magento site. He dives into the aspects of setting up a shop using the default look (or theme) provided by Magento, and stops just short of skinning the actual website with a completely new appearance. As I understand it, Packt is working on releasing a new book to cover the skinning aspects of Magento, and is due out any day now.

The Book: An Overview of What’s Covered

The book begins your tour of Magento with an introduction of the book and what is covered. As with most books of this magnitude, it next provides a step by step walkthrough of installing Magento and even provides some tips for installing the product on various platforms. The installation chapter ends with a check point, to insure that you have understood the concepts that you read, and are ready to begin the next set of chapters. The author has even provided an Appendix that contains step-by-step directions for the installation in one place. It eliminates the explanations, and makes for a wonderful walkthrough and reference, if you’ve already read the installation chapter, but simply need a quick guide or refresher.

While reading the installation chapter, I did come across one section in particular that left a thought in my head about what new e-commerce developers would think of the subject. That subject being, “the encryption key”. As seen on the installation page, the Magento installation software says “Magento uses this key to encrypt passwords, credit cards and more. If this field is left empty the system will create an encryption key for you and will display it on the next page”. I remember thinking to myself, “well, what’s the best practice here? Is it to leave it empty or provide one myself”. There should have been a little more details provided by the author in order to make that decision.

On the positive side, the author did a great job in this chapter of providing little helpful tid-bits. For example, he points out that one of the most common errors with a Magento installation is to see the “No input file specified” error from the frontend side after installing Magento. Then, he goes onto provide a few different things that should be checked in order to fix the problem.

Another thing that the author did well was to summarize his previously explained concepts. At the end of each section within a chapter, the author provides some kind of wrap up that brings the concept together, either on their own, or in relation to other concepts within the chapter, or across other chapters.

The next set of chapters dive into explaining the various concepts in Magento. He shows how these concepts translate to actually being able to view products online, and how to set them up. The author has done a fair job of explaining the relationship between some of the concepts. Concepts like Categories, Attributes, Attribute Sets, Simple Products, Configurable Products, and Grouped Products are explained very well. Then, the author describes how these all relate to each other, and goes on to explain how to put the pieces together.

During the next few chapters, topics include:

    Taxes

    Adding Simple Products

Customization of the Store’s appearance (including replacing the default theme with a new one)…note, this doesn’t mean that the author shows you how to create your own skin (or theme as they are referred to here)

    Going Beyond Simple Products

Customers and their Relationship to the rest of the store

Accpeting payments via gateways and merchant accounts

    And finally, Fulfilling an Order

I found the chapters to be near complete (only lacking in just a few little things). For example, I felt at times that the author made mention of certain topics, but didn’t get into the details. I also felt that sometimes, the author suggested something, but didn’t say why. If there are two choices on the table, I’d like to understand both choices in detail before I make a decision of one. That way, I can make an educated decision, and not based on someone else’s opinion.

    Summary

This book is definitely targeting new Magento users. So if you already have tons of experience in Magento, this book is not for you.

Overall, I thought the book does a great job of interacting with the reader and takes a pretty good approach in breaking up the advanced concepts from the simple ones. I would definitely welcome other books from this author.

There’s always an errata here or there and things that others (like myself) feel that could have been done better, or explained differently, but I believe that this books covered about 90% of what most basic newbies will ever want.

If you’d like to see a sample chapter of the book, please feel free to visit the publishers website at Packt Publishing and view the sample chamber they have available on their website.

If you’d like to learn more about getting your online store in Magento started or need help within your existing Magento store, please feel free to contact me. My team will be happy to help you however we can.

How to Set Up Your Own Website and Do-it-Yourself – I Have the Perfect Book for You!

    2010 - 12.16

Well Microsoft has finally made a tool that makes building your own website quite easy, in fact, so easy that anyone can do it. The program is called Expression Web and on the CD that comes with the program is a nice tutorial (it’s very good) and the program itself has all sorts of help features. But sometimes it is not so easy to read the help menu, while configuring pages on your website.

Therefore it makes sense to get a good Step-by-Step guide to help you. Now then, Microsoft thought of that and the program comes with a small flip chart that you can use until you become proficient with the program. Still, I myself like to have a book near bye with everything I need to know, while working. So, I recommend that you go buy:

“Step-By-Step Microsoft Expression Web” – Build exactly the skills you need and Learn at the Pace you want” by Chris Leeds and Microsoft Corporation and Publishing. 2008.

Now then, this is a brand new book on the shelves as of this last month. It is excellent and addresses all the changes to the program and it also includes a CD ROM in the back with skill building practice files, so you can practice and play around with your websites without changing them. And the entire book is backed up in a complete eBook on the CD ROM.

This book is great for the beginner like me or the advanced web designer like my web guy guru. Luckily, I was able to save 10% with my Barnes and Noble book discount card and it was on sale too! Maybe you might get lucky too, but either way it is a great book and you can read it at your own speed and flip thru the chapters to find whatever you need, whenever you need it. I highly recommend this book.

    2010 - 11.26

Ever tried to watch live TV online for free? Then you know that there are plenty of opportunities to do so. Yet, you might not be aware of all the alternatives available to you nowadays.

First, there is a thick bunch of websites allowing you to watch live TV online for free. Some require registration and downloading an application, others just stream the programs live and you can see them the moment you open their webpage.

As exciting as it may sound, the opportunity of getting free TV channels right on your PC has certain flaws. The beauty of grabbing free stuff comes along with shoddy quality most of the time. Fair enough: you get what you pay for.

Unless you have the speediest Internet connection, forget about live streaming programs. But even with it, if you computer doesn’t meet certain requirements, watching live TV will hardly be possible. You can watch live TV online for free, but when it interrupts every few seconds, it can really drive you mad.

In terms of channel selection, you may occasionally get lucky and dig out a few channels of your interest. However, what you get in most cases are news, movie trailers, chopped music videos and a few international channels (unfortunately, either too boring or in rare local languages).

Yet, you can watch live TV online for free. For that, you need to buy downloadable software that tunes you to thousands of satellite channels worldwide. Alright, this way is not completely free, but once the software is installed, you will never have to pay again. A small one-time fee is completely worth tons of live channels on your computer – those include live sports, TV shows, movies, non-stop music channels, and nearly anything you can think of.

Rest assured, you will get all these channels and programs absolutely legally as they are Free to Air TV Broadcasts. In other words, satellite stations themselves let you watch live TV online for free. Good quality and easy access is guaranteed thanks to the software application, which will work with any connection speed and computer configuration.

In our advanced era, satellite and cable subscription is no more the only way to ensure the channel variety. With more and more things becoming available on the Net, it is only logical that TV channels went online as well.
