What is the Best Shopping Cart Software For Your Ecommerce Website?

    2012 - 03.17

Searching for the best shopping cart software for you ecommerce website can be a daunting task. There are literally hundreds of carts and ecommerce solutions available. How do you know which one is right for you?

You should consider the following factors when you are searching for a shopping cart that fits your needs.

What is a shopping cart? How much does it cost? Should I buy or lease a cart? What Features Should I Look For? What Kind and How Much Support Does will I get? Which Payment Gateways Work with the Cart? What Hosting/Server Platform is Required? What if I Need Customization?
    What is a Shopping Cart?

First, let me define a shopping cart or ecommerce website. In the most basic terms, a shopping cart is software that allows you to list your products on a web site and then automatically collect fees when a customer buys products from your website.

For example, lets say that you sell vitamins from your home, and now you want to start selling them on your website. First, you need shopping ecommerce software. You will also need to have a business bank account and a payment gateway, a service that allows you to automatically process credit cards on your web site.

Once you have the cart software set up on your website, you can add your vitamin products to the website using a web browser. The software allows you to add product images, descriptions, prices, shipping and tax rates, and so on. Once your cart is populated with all of your products, you can start selling them on the web.

Here’s how it works: A customer comes to your web site and adds products to her shopping cart. When she is ready to buy the products, she enters her shipping and credit card information in a form so you know where to ship the product and whom to charge it to. When the customer clicks the button to submit the order, the shopping cart uses your payment gateway (credit-card-processing service) to validate the credit card and then transfer the money from the customer’s credit card to your bank account. Then it’s up to you to ship the product.

You can also use a shopping cart to sell digital, or downloadable products such as electronic books, music, and software.

How Much Do Shopping Carts Cost?

As you might expect, shopping carts come in a wide range of prices, from free to thousands of dollars. Does that mean that the more you spend, the better cart you get? Not necessarily.

There are several free shopping carts that are very powerful and full of features; for example, OSCommerce and ZenCart. Both of these carts are completely free and offer most of the features you would expect in a modern shopping cart: unlimited products, connections to the major payment gateways, credit card payments, real-time shipping prices, discount customer groups, multi language, and more.

Unfortunately, there is a downside to free: free products lack good documentation and support. For example, there is no official support group that you can call when you need help. And there is no official user’s guide to explain how to use the software. You usually have to search through user forums to find answers to your questions.

Free shopping carts are probably not be the best choice if you are new to ecommerce and are trying to do everything yourself.

Fortunately, there are many commercial carts in the range of $100-500 that offer lots of features. The carts in this range usually have some kind of support system to help you with problems, and they usually have documentation to explain how to use their software. X-Cart and Ecommerce Templates are two carts between $150 – $200, and both are very powerful and relatively easy to use.

Should I Buy or Lease a Shopping Cart?

There are two basic models for online shopping carts:

Pay a one time fee for the software and install it on your web server: This can be a daunting task unless you are comfortable working with Linux web servers and configuring web-based software. The good thing about this model is that you don’t have to pay monthly fees, and the software is usually much more customizable than leased shopping carts. If you have the skills to install the software on your server, or if you hire a website designer to install and configure your shopping cart, this method is more economical than leasing. Pay a monthly or yearly fee to lease the software: This model is easy to implement because you don’t need to install, configure, or maintain any software. If you are going to do it yourself and have little web experience, this is the easiest way to get started. The downside is that leased software is often hard to customize and many ecommerce sites need some customization. Furthermore, it can be very expensive when you add in the cost of leasing over many years.
What Shopping Cart Features Should I Look For?

Most shopping carts come with standard features like unlimited categories and products, web-based administration, easy-to-use product creation screens, and tax and shipping calculation. Unfortunately, not all carts include all the functions YOUR business will need to operate an online store.

The following is a list of features to look for in a shopping cart:

    Installation and Design

Easy-to-use web interface: A web interface allows you to administer your shopping cart from any web browser that is connected to the internet. Shopping Cart Reporting: The ability to get detailed reports about your sales, inventory, states, users, categories, products, destination zones, taxes, shipping rates, orders, membership levels, etc. Multiple Languages: The ability to display multiple languages in your shopping cart Customer Support: Most carts usually provide email or forum-based support, but sometimes they provide live phone support. Upgradeable: Find out if you can get free updates as the software is improved. Usually you can get free updates for 6 to 12 months. Template-based Design: Tempate-based designs make it easier to customize the look of your website WYSIWYG Editor for Products: This feature allows you to enter product text and images using a word-processor-like editor. Content Pages: Does your cart allow you to create content pages? For example, can you create an “About Us” page? Mini-Cart: A mini cart is a small box that indicates if the user has items in their shopping cart. These are usually located on the top or side of the page. Most carts have this feature.
    Customer Features

Newsletter Function: Do you need to ability to send mass emails to your customers? Many carts come with the ability to send emails to customers. Customer Order / Customer Account / Customer Registration: The ability for your customers to view their account and their order history. Product Search: A search tool for your products. This function is especially helpful if you have more than 20 or 30 products. Googlecheckout: Google Checkout is a new service that makes online shopping faster, safer and more convenient. Many carts have been updated so they work with Google Checkout. Wish list: A “Wish List” allows your customers to save products to a wish list. That way they can come back to your online store at a later date and buy the products in the Wish List. Send to friend: This feature displays a form that allows customer to enter a name and email address so the can send a link of a product to a friend. Memberships and special pricing: This feature allows you to create memberships on your store and then give them special prices or discounts. Printable Invoices: The feature allows your customers to print their invoices. Multiple Shipping Addresses: The feature allows customers to store multiple shipping addresses. This is a handy feature for customer who often ship gifts to friends and family members.
    Store and Products

Unlimited Number of Products: This feature means you can list as many products as you like. With many leased shopping carts, the total number of products is limited by your plan. The more you pay, the more you products you can list. Unlimited number of categories: Products are usually stored in categories; for example, Men’s Clothing, Women’s Clothing, Children’s clothing. Products can be assigned to multiple categories: This feature allows you to assign a product to more than one category. Featured Products: This feature allows you to list feature products in a box or area on your home page. Bestsellers: This feature automatically lists your best-selling products. Related products: This feature allows you to relate one product to another product so the customer can see products that are related to the product they are looking at. Unlimited product options and option price modifiers: This feature allows you to add options to products, and the options can add or subtract from the product price. For example, T-Shirts come in sizes Small, Medium, and Large and colors Red, Green, and Blue. Custom Input Fields for Products: This allows you to add fields to products. For example, if you sell custom greeting cards, you can use a custom field so the customer can enter a custom message to be printed on the card. Unlimited number of product images: This feature allows you to add more than one product image for a product. Popup Product Images: This feature allows you to add popup images so your customer can see a larger, more detailed product image. Manufacturers: This feature allows you to associate manufacturers with products. Drop Shippers: This feature allows you to sell products that another company stocks and ships. When your store receives an order for a drop shipper product, the shopping cart sends an email to the drop shipper with the product and shipping information and that company ships the product to your customer. Discount coupon codes and gift certificates: This feature allows you to sell gift certificates or to offer coupon discounts. Inventory control: This feature allows you to enter the number of products you have in stock and then automatically makes a product “Unavailable” when there are no more products in stock. Quantity discounts: This feature allows you to give discounts based on the quantity ordered. Retail and wholesale price: This feature allows you to create a wholesale and retail price for any product. Limit minimal order amount: The feature allows you to specify and minimum order amount. Real-time USPS, FedEx and UPS shipping calculation: This feature allows you to provide realtime shipping calculations for USPS, FedEx, and UPS. Shipping Label Generator for USPS and UPS Allow your customers to choose delivery methods: This feature allows your customers to select a delivery method; for example, USPS, FedEx, or UPS. Add handling fee: This feature allows you to add a handling fee per order. Digital Electronic Downloads: This feature allows you to sell digital products such as E-Books, Music, or Software. Once a customer purchases a digital product, the cart sends them an email with a link to download the digital product. Product-specific taxes: The feature allows you to charge a unique tax on any product. Payment Gateways: This feature is VERY important. Most carts support many different payment gateways; for example, Authorize.net, Paypal, or 2CheckOut. If you already have a payment gateway, make sure the cart you purchase supports your gateway. The ability to Optimize all pages for search engines: This important feature allows you to optimize your product and content pages for Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other search engines. This is a VERY important feature; if the search engines can’t find your products, your customers can’t find them either. Multiple Administrator Accounts and Account Levels: This feature allows you to have multiple administration accounts. This feature is very handy if more than one person maintains your shopping cart.
What Kind and How Much Support Does the Shopping Cart Provide?

Shopping cart software and ecommerce is pretty complex and there are many opportunities for problems. Whatever shopping cart model you choose, be sure to consider amount and type of support offered by the leasing host or the software seller. Because a smooth operation of your website and shopping cart are necessary for financial success, you’ll want to have appropriate support for emergencies.

Which Payment Gateways Work with the Shopping Cart?

If you are going to use a leased shopping cart, or you are going to buy shopping cart software, find out which payment gateways will work with the shopping cart.

Note: Each shopping cart provider builds their own interfaces for payment gateways.

    What Hosting/Server Platform is Required?

Will your website and shopping cart be hosted on a Linux / UNIX server or a Windows server? If you are going to use a hosted shopping cart, you probably don’t need to worry about this unless you already have other web-based software applications installed on your current web host.

If you are going to buy shopping cart software, your choice might be limited by your server choice. Currently there are many more shopping carts made for Linux / UNIX than for windows.

    What if I Need Customization?

Every shopping cart I have installed, designed, and configured, has required some customization. In most cases, the client wanted to do something the cart did not do. For example, one client wanted the ability to send a custom email with specific products so he could send special instructions whenever a customer ordered a specific product. A few shopping carts have this ability, but most don’t.

The best solution is to first determine your specific requirements and then find a cart that fits your needs. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find a cart that does EVERYTHING you want it to do. If this is the case, you’ll need to have some custom development done to add a new function to the cart.

Keep in mind that many popular shopping carts have dozens of Modifications and Plugins that you can add to the shopping cart software to make it fulfill your requirements.

Note: If you use a leased shopping cart, you will probably not be able to make modifications to the software.

Are Joomla Template Clubs Worth the Price?

    2012 - 03.11

By now most web developers and designers have heard of Joomla because of its ease of use and its effectiveness as a fully featured and open sourced CMS. The backend is very powerful but easy enough for someone without much experience. In that respect Joomla has been increasing its presence all over the world.

Joomla’s back end is what the administrator and developers use to build the structure of the site however it must be tied with an equally impressive front end: the template. There are many free templates in Joomla and rarely, if ever, will you find one that isn’t cookie cutter or bare bones. The free templates in all respects are very weak especially if you have any experience with free templates from wordpress which are much more impressive. But the professional template clubs fill that void.

Joomla is often used by professional web designers who are building sites for their clients cost effectively. A client who wants a site built with Joomla does so to save tremendous amounts of money as developers don’t come cheap. So for the site to uphold its professionalism without costing thousands of dollars, they will most likely choose Joomla and pair that with a professionally designed template from one of the major template clubs.

There is now a large Joomla marketplace solely because of this fact. If you want to remain competitive with your peers, competitors, and other Joomla designers than it would be very wise to be a part of a Joomla template club. Not all clubs are created equally though, as with everything, some are better than others and it makes sense to look around and see which clubs consistently provide the best templates. Joomla is continuing to grow at very fast paces due to its ease of use for novice and experienced designers and developers. At every corner you turn there is another person praising Joomla for its effectiveness and all around perfection. I would urge anyone interested in Joomla to get some shared hosting and play around with Joomla. Show it off to your friends and pretty soon one of them will ask for a site from you and you will be on your way to becoming a Joomla developer.

Using WordPress as an Affiliate Marketing Platform

    2012 - 03.02

I started using WordPress as an affiliate marketing platform about a year ago. I’ve had great results! WordPress’ blogging software is very easy to install and use. Also Google loves it!

There are two WordPress sites. WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

WordPress.com is a free blogging site like Blogger, Weebly, or any of a host of others. With the .com site, you don’t have to have your own web hosting. The big problem with WordPress.com is you can’t really monetize it, and you can’t modify the look and feel of it very much. So, if you’re interested in affiliate marketing, WordPress.com is not what you want. You want WordPress.org.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org are run by the same company. WordPress.org, however, is open source blogging software you download to your own site on your own host. Now, before you freak out, if you’re a technophobe, I’ve got two things to say about this downloading business:

it’s really not hard to do. I don’t particularly like the technical aspect of internet marketing, yet I can do it. if you’re using a good web host, they can probably do it for you. Some charge a nominal fee, other’s don’t.

Either way, once you get the software downloaded to your own domain, you’re ready to go.

Your WordPress blog will look like any other generic blog. It will have menus for recent posts, categories, that sort of thing. For the purposes of affiliate marketing, you don’t need all of this. A lot of it can be deleted. Let’s talk about what you need to modify to make a decent affiliate marketing site. You can put your product descriptions where you post. Let the categories be the product lines.

For instance, if you were selling coffee makers, one category might be Krupps, the other Black and Decker.

WordPress has a “page” feature. You can make static pages that show up in your navigation bar. I use those to list all of the products from a certain line.

I also sometimes use the “Recent Posts” feature, although I don’t show the date of the post. I’ve set up a number of these small affiliate sites using WordPress as a platform. I’ll set them up, do a little search engine optimization on them, then leave them alone and let them run. They’re kind of like having several ATM machines that spit out money each month–except this money doesn’t come out of my bank account!

The way I advocate you do internet marketing is to do your research and choose a good niche, then use one of the many Web 2.0 sites, like Squidoo or Hubpages, to actually test your idea. Only when I find out a new niche has traffic and this traffic actually buys stuff do I move on to making my own site on my own domain.

If I’m selling a limited number of things, then WordPress has turned out to be an easy to use and very successful way to create a website.

Google is predisposed to love blogs, too! So, getting traffic to a WordPress blog should be easier than to your own static site.

    Drupal Vs Joomla

    2012 - 02.18

    What is it?

Drupal – Developers choice, if you are the type of individual who thrives on hand-coded content and scripts. In comparison to other Content Management Systems (CMS), Drupal, relates more to the developer as its structure is more script based. This platform may not be strictly for designers unless they are willing to commit to the development side of web design and web functionality.

As being a CMS the functionality is quite similar to other popular choice, and for the sake of comparison: Joomla. When we talk about a functionality we think of the necessary features, blogs, comment section, author’s name, etc. Drupal, in its essentials, can function similar to any standard blog you see on the web today. However, the capabilities expand farther beyond the releam of blogging, and thrives, when building large dynamic sites.

Joomla – The name Joomla literally means “all together”, with that in mind comes the theory that the CMS would live up to its name. In comparison to Drupal, code-wise, Joomla falls short, for designers and artist a like, Joomla is more favoured as the support for themes is much larger based than Drupal. If you looking for a well designed theme with the basic functionalities of the standard “web 2.0″ blog, Joomla is a more favourable option.

In comparison to the two CMSs there is no better option but rather a personal preference or skill set. If you are more developer oriented, and do not mind the learning curve of Drupal, then Drupal would be the favourite of the two, if you are more on the art or design side, then Joomla would be the better choice, its not to say that a designer can not choose Drupal or a developer should not use Joomla once again it comes down to a matter of preference. Install both on a test server and see which one suites your needs accurately.

Joomla Code Overrides – Customize Default Layouts

    2012 - 01.25

Many webmasters use Joomla for their websites because it is open source, free to use, has a lot of extensions and templates and is simple to use. It has also a large community of developers. There are many components, modules and plugins for every possible task. In other words, Joomla is a universal content management system suitable for simple home pages and complex websites. For most purposes it is enough to install a template and few extensions for common needs like displaying ads or Google Analytics. But sooner or later you need to modify the original display or standard layouts. There are two ways to make such modifications. You can either modify the original code or to override Joomla core files.

The first approach by modifying the core files might work but only until you upgrade Joomla. This process may overwrite the modified files and destroy your hard work. The other approach is to create core overrides in the template directory. For every extension Joomla checks HTML directory in the selected template directory where you can copy original files and modify them to suit your needs. Extensions are not only those you have installed, Joomla comes with many plugins, components and modules that are needed for normal operation. Creating overrides is easy. You simply copy files that need to be modified into template/HTML directory. There is a rule on how to create paths for overridden extensions:

    TEMPLATE_NAME/html/EXTENSION_NAME/VIEW_NAME/FILE_NAME.php

One example for the overridden display of frontpage managed by the com_content component:

Original file PATH_TO_JOOMLA/components/com_content/views/frontpage/tmpl/default.php Override file TEMPLATE_NAME/html/com_content/frontpage/default.php

Joomla overrides are an elegant way to modify original functionality without modifying core files. Overrides work for built-in and custom installed extensions. Many times where you would like to change the blog display, add advertising code between articles or change any default layout, you don’t have to look for a special extension. All you need is to find the file in Joomla directory where this page element is created and create an override in the template/HTML directory. Of course, you need to be familiar with HTML and PHP code, but this is pretty easy because you will only modify existing code. This way you can customize your Joomla website without installing any extension. The advantage of overrides is that they still work after the Joomla files are updated, but the disadvantage is that they are linked with template. If you change it you need to copy overridden files and modify them for the new design.

Make Your Joomla Site Stand Out With RocketTheme

    2012 - 01.17

RocketTheme is one of the well respected template providers for Joomla! In fact, one of their lead designers is a member of the core Joomla! development team. RocketTheme subscribers tend to be enthusiastic users of the site, which says a lot about the user community that has built around the excellent guidance provided on their forums.

Almost all the templates come with bonus components and modules to get the most out of your Joomla sites, and they were first to proved an streamlined installer package (they call it their RocketLauncher) that not only installs Joomla on your site, but installs the template, components and modules along with demo content to get you hooking along with a minimum of fuss.

    What’s Included:

What Joomla Version do the templates work on – Joomla 1.x or 1.5 ?

There is still a huge amount of Joomla sites out there using the older Joomla 1.x as there are some great modules still not available for the new Joomla 1.5. RocketTheme know this, so all of their new themes are both 1.x and 1.5 compatible. However if you are using Joomla 1.5 and it’s enhanced features, you get an extra level of usability and features from your RocketTheme theme. If you like some of their older templates and have installed 1.5 then don’t worry, the older themes are being ported to 1.5 with added features.

How many templates are there and how often do they get updated?

Tons. As of May there is 66 and you get access to all of them. RocketTheme release a new theme every month, and each one seems to top the previous. That means if you sign up today for a year, before your membership runs out you will have access to up to 79 professional Joomla templates.

How good are the templates and how much can I edit them?

RocketTheme’s templates, especially the past 12 months, have been some of the most versatile and customisable templates on the market. In fact, they sometimes suffer from being too complex due to the amount of customisations that can be done. They provide you with numerous variety in module styles and module positions, and this allows you to take the basic RocketTheme theme and turn it into something unique for your site. Want to make it even more custom? Then leave a message in the forum and have one of the developers help you out with your custom changes. On top of that all source files are supplied so you can easily customise the theme further to suit your needs.

What other cool bonuses are offered?

One of the selling points is the previously mentioned user forum. Here you have access to not only the theme developers, but hundreds of users who are all willing to help each other out. Also you have access to some specially modified versions of their templates suited to specific uses (video game web sites for example), as well as a collection of free Joomla components.

How much does it cost and are their any restrictions on how I can use the theme?

RocketTheme offers three levels of membership

    * 3 months $50US
    * 12 months $75US
    * Developer 12 months 250

Discounts apply for renewal of memberships.

It must be noted that on the basic memberships you are limited as to how many web sites you can concurrently use the templates. As stated in the RocketTheme Terms and Conditions:

Limited usage granted: Your membership grants you the rights to use the RTTC templates on as many concurrent sites as described in the matrix below. For example, a 3 month membership entitles you to use any RocketTheme theme on a maximum of 2 sites. If you renew your membership for 1 year, you are entitled to use the templates on an additional 2 sites, for a maximum of 4 sites. Even after your membership expires, you may continue to use the templates on these 4 sites, so the templates are not time-limited. If you wish to use a theme for a non-profit site, they do not count against your maximum concurrent theme usages.

Now while I do not particularly like the limited license, it is standard fare across most theme clubs.

    Final Opinion

RocketTheme is likely my favourite theme club at the moment. They provide toprate templates, with amazing features yet manage to maintain the ability to customise the site for your unique stylings. Many times I have been stuck for inspiration for a web site design and played around with a RocketTheme theme and come up with something striking and individualunique. Although like most theme clubs the limited license is a setback, I believe the expense worth it for access to such a great user and support community. If you do only join one Joomla Template club, it is hard to go past RocketTheme.

    WordPress For Affiliate Sites

    2012 - 01.14

WordPress is perfectly suited to building affiliate sites for so many reasons that it is now one of the most popular tools of all in the affiliate marketers arsenal. The keys to success as an affiliate are driving significant traffic to your affiliate sites and then convincing as many of those visitors to click your affiliate links and actually buy something. When they do, you make money.

Let’s start off by talking about traffic generation when it comes to WordPress for affiliate sites. For some reason that nobody really understands, it seems that WordPress sites tend to get very good listings in the search engines. Indeed some people have joked that the word “blog” really means “Better Listings On Google”. Perhaps it is the way WordPress sites are laid out, perhaps it is the regularly updated content. Whatever it is, WordPress affiliate sites are great for traffic.

There are also other ways in which WordPress sites are great for generating affiliate traffic. For example WordPress provides an RSS feed which allows readers to actually subscribe to your site, leading to regular, repeat visitors. You can also submit this RSS feed to a range of specialist blog search engines which again helps to generate traffic to your site.

The second element, as mentioned, is that once you have got some visitors to your site you then need to convince them to buy something.

Luckily WordPress has an impressive array of features here too. Firstly because WordPress affiliate sites are database driven it is very quick and easy to make changes to the layout of your site so you can quickly change the appearance to see what has the best results.

And lastly WordPress uses plugins – little pieces of code – that allow you to do all sorts of clever things with your affiliate site. And this too can increase your affiliate sales.
